The College of Spirits Bard has made the jump from Unearthed Arcana to official subclass in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. So now we can do the fun part: look at what survived, what changed, and whether the release version feels better at the table.

The short version is pretty simple. This subclass is mostly the same, but the level 3 engine is stronger and more flexible. The release version keeps the spooky spirit-table identity, then gives you more control over when randomness matters. That is a good direction for this Bard.

Description

Bards of the College of Spirits conjure legendary and long-dead spirits to change the world once more. These spirits are powerful, strange, and not always fully predictable, which is exactly what gives the subclass its charm.

What Changed From Unearthed Arcana?

Channeler (Level 3)

The UA version gave you Guiding Whispers and Spiritual Focus. Guiding Whispers added Guidance with a 60-foot range, while Spiritual Focus gave you proficiency with playing cards and let you use the cards or a few occult-feeling objects as a Bard spellcasting focus.

Release

The release version keeps the same basic pieces. Guiding Whispers still improves Guidance, and Spiritual Focus still gives the playing-card proficiency and focus options.

My take

No real change here, and that is fine. This feature was already doing the right job: it establishes the subclass flavor immediately without trying to carry the whole subclass by itself.

Spirits from Beyond (Level 3)

Buff

In the UA, you spent Bardic Inspiration as a Bonus Action, rolled your Bardic Inspiration die, and used the result to determine which spirit answered. Most of the table was already very flavorful, but row 12 was Controlled Channeling, which let you choose another result instead.

Release

The release version keeps the core spirit table and the first eleven spirit results appear effectively unchanged. The big difference is control. Controlled Channeling is now a separate way to choose a specific spirit whose number is no higher than your Bardic Inspiration die size, and Unleash Spirit lets a channeled spirit take effect as a Magic action. Row 12 becomes Priest, which heals and can remove a major condition.

My take

This is the best improvement in the subclass. I like random tables, but I like them more when the player has meaningful ways to steer them. The new Priest result is also much more useful than another “choose a result” entry now that choosing has moved into the feature itself.

Empowered Channeling (Level 6)

The UA version gave you Power from Beyond, adding a d6 bonus once per turn when your Bard spell dealt damage or restored Hit Points. Spiritual Manifestation also prepared Spirit Guardians for you, gave you one free casting, and let you modify the spell so you and allies inside it had Half Cover. The modified casting refreshed on a Short or Long Rest.

Release

The release version keeps the same general package: Power from Beyond is still the extra d6 on damage or healing, and Spiritual Manifestation still ties the subclass to Spirit Guardians and the protective Half Cover twist. The notable tightening is that the modified Spirit Guardians use appears to refresh on a Long Rest rather than a Short or Long Rest.

My take

I still like this feature. Spirit Guardians is a strong and very flavorful spell to attach to this subclass, and adding Half Cover makes the ghostly protection feel distinct. The recharge tightening is a small nerf, but the feature still reads well overall.

Mystical Connection (Level 14)

The UA version let you roll twice on the Spirits from Beyond table and choose which of the two effects to bestow.

Release

The release version keeps that advantage-like roll on the spirit table. It also adds a nice fallback: if both dice show the same number, you can choose any effect on the table instead.

My take

This is a clean upgrade. The original version was already good because it made the table less swingy. The new same-number fallback makes duplicate rolls exciting instead of disappointing, which is exactly the kind of small polish I like in a random-table subclass.

Final Thoughts

College of Spirits came through the release process in good shape. It is still a Bard who channels unpredictable dead spirits through cards, whispers, and strange occult focus objects. The main difference is that the official version gives you more agency over the spirit table.

That matters a lot. Randomness can be fun, but too much randomness can make a subclass feel like it is happening to you rather than being played by you. The release version keeps the surprise while adding better control, and that makes the subclass feel much stronger to me.

Overall, this looks like a buff, especially at level 3. Channeler did not need much work, Empowered Channeling is still solid, and Mystical Connection gets a small but satisfying improvement. The real win is Spirits from Beyond. That is the feature that makes the subclass, and the official version makes it more flexible without sanding away the weirdness.
