Ravenloft: The Horrors Within - Undead Patron (Warlock)
Table of Contents
The Undead Patron Warlock has returned from Unearthed Arcana as an official subclass in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. Its central fantasy remains intact: transform into an avatar of your patron, frighten enemies, and become increasingly difficult to kill.
The release version mostly improves that foundation. Its spell list is stronger, level 6 gains a welcome damage boost, and Superior Dread becomes more defensive and mobile. The major exception is Unholy Resuscitation, which is considerably weaker than its playtest version.
Description
Undead Patron Warlocks make pacts with beings that have escaped the normal cycle of life and death, such as liches and vampires. Their patron’s power lets them assume a dreadful form, wield necrotic magic, and survive injuries that should have killed them.
What Changed From Unearthed Arcana?
Undead Spells (Level 3)
UA
The UA list included Blindness/Deafness, False Life, Phantasmal Force, Ray of Sickness, Speak with Dead, Vampiric Touch, Death Ward, Phantasmal Killer, Antilife Shell, and Cloudkill.
Release
The release replaces False Life with Bane, Vampiric Touch with Summon Undead, and Death Ward with Greater Invisibility. The remaining spells are unchanged.
My take
This is a better list for me. Bane, Summon Undead, and Greater Invisibility are all useful spells that support different approaches to play, giving the Warlock more interesting choices than the UA list.
Form of Dread (Level 3)
UA
The UA transformation granted temporary Hit Points, immunity to the Frightened condition, and the ability to frighten a creature after hitting it with an attack roll.
Release
The release keeps those benefits. It simply separates the old Frightful Avatar wording into Fearless Form for the immunity and Frightful Avatar for frightening enemies.
My take
This is a presentation change rather than a power change. Splitting the benefits makes Form of Dread easier to scan without changing the feature that defines the subclass.
Grave Touched (Level 6)
UA
Arcane Necrosis let your necrotic spells and attacks ignore resistance, and let you change a damaging spell’s damage type to necrotic once per turn while using Form of Dread. Undead Endurance protected you from exhaustion caused by dehydration, malnutrition, or suffocation and removed your need to sleep.
Release
Arcane Necrosis and Undead Endurance remain effectively unchanged. The release adds Dreaded Necrosis: once per turn, when an attack roll deals necrotic damage while you are using Form of Dread, you can roll one additional damage die.
My take
This is a clean buff. Dreaded Necrosis rewards the subclass for leaning into its signature damage type and gives Form of Dread another meaningful offensive benefit without complicating the turn.
Necrotic Husk (Level 10)
UA
Necrotic Resilience granted resistance to necrotic damage, upgraded to immunity during Form of Dread. Unholy Resuscitation damaged nearby creatures for 2d10 plus your Warlock level when you dropped to 0 Hit Points, then restored Hit Points equal to ten times your Charisma modifier.
Release
Necrotic Resilience remains unchanged. Unholy Resuscitation now deals necrotic damage equal to 2d10 plus your Charisma modifier and restores Hit Points equal to twice your Warlock level. It still gives you one Exhaustion level and recharges after a short or long rest.
My take
This is a substantial downgrade. Both the explosion and the recovery are weaker, especially for a Warlock with a high Charisma modifier. The feature can still rescue you at an important moment, but it is much less dramatic than the UA version.
Superior Dread (Level 14)
UA
The UA capstone granted flight with hovering, component-free casting for Warlock Conjuration and Necromancy spells, and Vitality Siphon, which restored Hit Points equal to your Charisma modifier once per turn when you dealt necrotic damage.
Release
Profane Casting remains unchanged. Ghostly Flight keeps the flying speed and hover, then adds the ability to move through creatures and objects as Difficult Terrain, with a risk of taking force damage if you end your turn inside one. Vitality Siphon is replaced by Dreaded Resistance, which grants resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.
My take
I think this is a slight buff overall. Losing repeatable healing hurts, but broad resistance to common weapon damage is excellent, and moving through creatures and objects makes Ghostly Flight much more useful. The release version feels less vampiric and more like becoming an untouchable spirit.
Final Thoughts
The official Undead Patron remains very close to the Unearthed Arcana version, but most of its changes make the subclass more appealing. The revised spell list gives it stronger options, and Dreaded Necrosis adds a simple reason to build around necrotic attack damage while Form of Dread is active.
Unholy Resuscitation is the obvious disappointment. Its UA numbers were extremely generous, but the release version loses enough damage and healing that the difference will be immediately noticeable. Superior Dread is a more interesting trade: I will miss Vitality Siphon, but weapon resistance and improved Ghostly Flight make the Warlock wonderfully difficult to contain.
Overall, I think the release version is stronger and more focused. It keeps the excellent transformation at the heart of the subclass while making its necrotic offense and ghostly movement feel more rewarding.
