TTRPG Starter Obsidian Vault

Open Source

This vault is a ready-to-use Obsidian starter built for tabletop RPG information. It is intentionally agnostic, so you can use it for published systems, homebrew worlds, campaign prep, or personal reference notes without locking yourself into one ruleset.

It is still opinionated in useful ways: the folder names stay simple, the plugin bundle stays lightweight, and the defaults are designed to help you create notes quickly while keeping the vault organized over time.

What's included

🧭

System-agnostic by default

Start with a clean structure that works for D&D, Pathfinder, OSR campaigns, homebrew settings, and other TTRPG workflows.

🗂️

Practical vault structure

Use folders for admin docs, archives, attachments, bases, notes, and templates without overcomplicating the setup.

🧩

Opinionated plugin bundle

Ship with a lightweight set of community and core plugins that improve daily use without turning the vault into a maintenance project.

📝

Template-driven notes

Create notes with Templater, generate consistent frontmatter, and automatically move files into the right folder under notes.

🔎

Bases-ready organization

Group notes into broad base categories like classes, magic items, modules, monsters, and spells for easier browsing and filtering.

📁

Local-first and portable

Everything stays in plain Markdown on your machine, so you can change tools later without losing your content.

How to get started

  1. 1

    Install Obsidian

Download Obsidian from the official site, then keep the starter vault locally on your machine like any other folder.

  2. 2

    Download and open the vault

Use the ZIP download or GitHub repository, extract the files, and open the folder as an Obsidian vault.

  3. 3

Create a new note with Templater

Use Cmd+N to trigger the template flow. Pick the note type you want and let Templater create the file with the matching frontmatter and location.

  4. 4

    Fill the frontmatter

Update the note metadata at the top of the file, including the base value that connects the note to the right base view.

  5. 5

    Validate the setup

Use Cmd+O to find the note with Omnisearch, confirm the file landed in the correct notes folder, and verify it appears in the matching base.
